GENERAL! SUMMARY: A Registered Professional Nurse who acts as a Primary or Associate Nurse utilizing the Nursing Process to care for adolescent/adult/geriatric patients and their families. Able to scrub and circulate major Orthopedic cases

PRINCIPAL FUNCTIONS:

3. Department Specific Responsibilities

Utilizes effective interviewing skills to assess perioperative patients in a thorough and systematic manner prior to the patient entering the Operating Room:

Assesses the needs of the elderly based on their developmental functioning, emphasizing: cognitive, mobility, continence, nutrition and skin.

Assesses the needs of the adolescent based on their developmental functioning, emphasizing: cognitive,! physical and phychosocial developmental needs.

Recog! nizes subtle or more complex variables during nursing assessments and follows through by integrating patient's condition with surgical intervention.

Utilizes clinical resources appropriately. (Nurse Manager, Case Manager, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Surgeon, Anesthesiologist)

Involves the patient and family in the plan of care.

Implements a plan of care for the elderly based on assessment findings. Implements a plan of care for the adolescent based on assessment findings.

Identifies the need for and participates in patient care and continuing education conferences.

Plans and monitors interventions and outcomes based on patient needs. Responds to emergent or changing patient status by anticipating and having readily available the needs of the surgical team.

Maintains an appropriate caseload of primary/ associate patients by being competent to scrub or circulate in the various surgical specialties, and run the holding room.!

Utilizes available written resources to obtain information (i.e., Standards of Care, Policy & Procedures, AORN standards).

Performs procedures and treatments according to established departmental guidelines.

Documents on patients accurately and completely.

Follows documentation policies and procedures.

Utilizes supplies and equipment in a knowledgeable, safe and cost-effective manner.

Including but not limited to using supplies diligently, completing charges appropriately, and updating preference sheets.

Reports malfunctioning equipment and accurately completes Biomedical Engineering forms.

Acts as a resource for troubleshooting equipment and is able to improvise meet the needs of the patient/procedure.

Effectively delegates responsibilities for certain tasks to assistive personnel within their job description.

Verbalizes rationale for decisions/actions.

Evaluates patients' p! rogress towards health care goals and offers additional or alternative ! strategies to ensure outcomes are achieved. This includes but is not limited to organizing equipment and supplies based on individual patient needs and standards of care.

Communicates discharge needs identified from Perioperative Nursing assessment to appropriate person (i.e., Case Manager, Primary Nurse or other).

Evaluates discharge needs throughout the length of stay in the Perioperative Area.

Incorporates the plan of care into the appropriate documentation tool (i! .e. Care Plan, Clinical Pathway).

Identifies trends/variances of recurrent problems such as patient readiness, room set-up, cleanup, and turnover that require follow-up.

Demonstrates competency in the utilization of Clinical Pathways/Operating Room Standards of Care/Policies and Procedures. Demonstrates technical/ clinical competencies. Assists with developing or revising Standards of Care.

4. Education (Patient/Family)

a. Identifies and evaluates patient/ family learning needs.

b. Implements teaching plan based on identified needs, using resources where indicated.

Provides education to the elderly based on identified developmental and resource needs.

Provides education to the adolescent based on identified developmental and resource needs.

c. Evaluates the effectiveness of the teaching plan and documents variances of the patient's understanding of and compliance to the plan.

5. Education (Staf! f)

Identifies learning needs of staff and supports individual ! clinical development, i.e. mentoring, sharing information from conferences, informal or formal teaching, sharing publications and information from professional journals.

Functions as a preceptor.

6. Education (Self)

Identifies appropriate educational needs in area of practice and seeks appropriate assistance.

Attends all mandatory educational programs.

7. Communication

Recognizes and responds appropriately to both verbal and nonverbal communications from patients, families, and staff.

Demonstrates effective communication with the health team by accurately reporting clinical status, keeping charge nurse informed, and actively working to resolve patient issues/problems.

Demonstrates emotional stability by not allowing personal/work-related problems to interfere with nursing practice and professional relationships.

Accepts constructive criticism and utilizes it for professional growth.

Wo! rks productively and cohesively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, training and experiences.

Follows through on issues surrounding patients' rights: l! egal implications (i.e., confidentiality, privacy), ethical standards o! f nursing practice. (i.e., reports non-compliance or variance in standards of practice or policies and procedures).

Coordinates and manages patient care through the use of assistive personnel.

Maintains a professional image by demeanor and appearance.

Additional expectations include but are not limited to: CNOR, Active membership in a professional organization, continuing or advanced education, BLS, ACLS.

9. Plans time away from work appropriately

Arrives and leaves at designated times.

Uses unplanned earned time appropriately.(Based on full time hours. Standards are pro-rated for part-time employees based on agreed hours.

10. Performs other related duties as required.

11. Attends annual safety review.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
CNI and CNII: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.

CNIII: Same as above with one year experience as a CNII. Expe! rience, training and special skills need to be unit specific.

LICENSE, CERTIFICATION REQUIRED: Current Massachusetts License Required.

EDUCATION:
BLS required. BSN or BSN prepared.

REQUIRED WORK EXPERIENCE:
1 year of OR RN Experience required

POPULATION SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:
1. Maintains competencies (position specific and hospital-wide) required for the specific patient population served.

OSHA EXPOSURE: The nature of the tasks/responsibilities required of employees in this position will likely expose them to blood and bodily fluids. Employees will be oriented to and required to understand and follow the universal precautions for infection control.
