This position is that of a Ship Restorer in the Ship Restorer Division of the Maintenance and Repair Department of the Naval Historical Center Detachment, Boston, Massachusetts . You will be responsible for performing maintenance and repair work on the USS Constitution in order to preserve the ship in its optimum state of safety, sound condition, and appearance.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

You must be a US Citizen.

Must be registered for Selective Service, see Legal & Regulatory Guidance.

Suitable for Federal employment as determined by background investigation.

Selectee may be required to successfully complete a probationary period.

You must obtain and maintain a security clearance.

DUTIES:
As a Ship Restorer, your duties will include, but not be limited to:

  • Performing maintenance and repair work on vessels or ships to preserve the ship in its optimum state of safety, sound, condition, and appearance.
  • Ensuring material compliance and documentation with historic requirements for the ship.
  • Installing ceiling planks, caulk seams and butts with cotton, oakum, and marine glue.
  • Exercising constant surveillance of a ship to report any sign of deterioration or any changes deemed necessary to improve fire protection, mooring arrangement, and general seaworthiness.
  • Fashioning and installing heavy structural timbers to include installing wood planking or decking.

REQUIREMENTS:
Selectee is required to participate in the Department of Defense direct deposit of pay program.

This position requires work the incumbent to perform work aloft at heights in excess of 150 feet.

The incumbent must have or be able to obtain a Government Driver's License.

Occasional travel is required within the United States and beyond.

Arduous exertion is required continuously in such phases of the Ship Restorer trade, such as the erecting of staging, fashioning, and installing heavy structural timbers, and installing wood planking and decking.

Working aloft requires agility, good eyesight, and good hearing.

This position has promotion potential to the WG-10 grade. In conjunction with fellow tradesman, handles staging planks, which vary from 80 to 100 pounds in weight and has to position these planks in areas that are inaccessible to crane service.

Quite frequently climbs ladders and staging and works in crouching, kneeling, and stooping positions.

Ship Restorers work outside most of the time regardless of weather conditions.

Poor illumination and confined spaces are common aboard ships.

Ship Restorers frequently work with poor footing conditions from which slips and falls can be fatal, especially while working aloft.

Subject to unusual noise levels from pneumatic tools, dirty, oily, greasy, or wet work areas.

Must wear hardhat, safety glasses, and steel toe shoes at all times in the performance of work duties.

In addition, wearing safety harnesses while working aloft is mandatory.

Incumbent is occasionally exposed to fumes from paints, solvents, etc.
