The staff nurse is a registered nurse who is responsible for assuring competent, compassionate and professional nursing care for adult and pediatric neuromuscular patie! nts in the MGH Neuromuscular Diagnostic Center ambulatory care setting. The staff nurse is responsible and accountable for the overall nursing care and management of unique and highly specialized patients in the Neuromuscular Diagnostic Practice.

The staff nurse collaborates with neuromuscular attendings; members of the patient care team, the Practice Manager and the patient to ensure the highest quality nursing care. The staff nurse reports directly to the Neurology Nursing Director.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide competent, compassionate nursing care representing the highest of nursing standards based on specific principles and the use of accepted nursing practice.
Provides and maintains a calm and therapeutic environment for patients, the general public, the families’ patients and for co-workers.
Utilizes advanced nursing knowledge to identify, prevent or solve complex and/or recurring patient care problems.
Teac! hes and educates patients and family about specific neuromuscu! lar conditions and recommendations
Triages and responds to all patients clinically based questions in a timely manner, appropriately prioritizing cases.
Identifies, facilitates, and evaluates the outcomes of nursing care for individual
patients or groups of patients.
Provides symptom management to patients according to established protocols in collaboration with M.D. /N.P. Utilizing established plan of care. Communicates changes in patient status to physician
Triages patient cases to be seen in the Neuromuscular Diagnostic Center working closely with the Medical Director.
Articulates the nursing role to the patient, the general public, and the families of patients.
Coordinates involvement of the patient, family members and the health team members in the patient care being provided.
Documents all relevant patient information in accordance with all Regulatory Standards.
Communicates the plan of patient care and other pertinent information t! o/from other health team members.
Knows and adheres to safety precaution techniques for Universal Precautions per Regulatory Standards.
Serves as a resource and oversees the operational flow of the clinic in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills based on current nursing and health care practices.
Provides input to the Nursing Director, Medical Director and Practice Manager regarding unit demands, concerns, issues and needs.

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
Critical care experience preferred.
Ability to work well under pressure a must.
Excellent interpersonal skills required. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Strong assessment and problem solving abilities.
Demonstrated organizational skills.
Strong leadership skills preferred.
Ability to work with staff of diverse educational and ethnic backgrounds required.
Adult and pediatric bl! ood draw abilities preferred.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or! REGISTRATIONS (if applicable):
Current Massachusetts’s licensure as a Registered Nurse.
BLS Certified

EDUCATION:
ASN required; BSN degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of five years general nursing experience preferred.
