Job Summary:
The Director of Nursing plans, organizes, develops and directs the overall operation of the Nursing department to ensure the highest degree of quality patient care in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations, and St. Patrick's Manor standards. Supervise members of the nursing staff and collaborate with them for carrying out tasks to insure optimal service at all levels of the nursing care.

Essential Duties:
Responsible for reading and understanding the contents of Mission and Philosophy Statements and integrating the values of the Carmelite Philosophy of Care in all job assignments
Respond to all staff, family members and residents in a courteous, patient and caring manner
Respect the dignity of each person
Communicate in a positive and helpful manner
Assume responsibility for the development of nursing service objectives, performance standards practice for each category of nursing personnel and nursing policies and procedures
Assume accountability for the development, organization and implementation of approved policies and procedures
Assume responsibility for nursing service compliance to federal, state and local regulations

Direct, evaluate and supervise all resident care and initiate corrective action as necessary
Assess resident care needs and assist in the development of individualized plans of resident care
Report problems to Administrator, Medical Director and conduct daily resident rounds and initiate corrective action as necessary
Identify safety hazards and initiate corrective action
Direct implementation of “Resident Bill of Rights"
Direct and supervise scheduling of employees within established guidelines for allocation of nursing service personnel on duty
Conduct interviews, hire nursing service employees, conduct counseling interviews and initiate disciplinary action as necessary
Prepare written employee performance evaluations and initiate recommendations for salary increases, promotions and termination’s

Direct and implement nursing service educational programs including, but not limited to, orientation and in-service for licensed and unlicensed nursing personnel
Conduct staff meetings with shifts for purposes of planning, coordinating and implementing nursing service policies and procedures
Communicate daily with nursing personnel providing clear, concise information as well as specific assignments

Participate in the planning and implementation of the nursing service budget
Direct allocation of nursing service equipment and supplies within the facility and establish guidelines for efficient, economical utilization of supplies and equipment
Insure availability of equipment for nursing personnel
Assess equipment and supply needs and make recommendations to Administrator

Participate in committee meetings and functions on committee as assigned
Direct Medicare assessments and related documentation
Consistently make level of care determination, based on the physician’s recommendations and plan of care, to assure a favorable “waiver of liability” status for the facility.
Make management reports and special assignments and adhere to established time schedules
Establish open lines of communication with consultants and consistently take follow-up action on recommendations.
Take inquiries for resident placement as assigned by the Admissions Office and initiate procedures for proper placement of residents and level of care determinations.
Coordinate resident admissions, transfers and discharges with staff, community agencies and other facilities.
Establish good public relations with hospital discharge coordinators and social service consultants

Conduct resident care conferences.
Assess resident responses to medications and treatments, and make appropriate recommendations for nursing action to be implemented.
Demonstrate consistent ability to manage nursing service problems, emergency situations and initiate “life saving” measures in the absence of a physician

General Requirements:

Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing and currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Minimum of five years of Nursing Administration or Supervisor experience, at least two of which have been in long term care.

Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing or a related field, or continuing education toward a degree in Nursing or related field.
