The Pappas Rehabilitation Hospital for Children (PRHC) is one of four public health hospitals operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. Located on a 168 acre campus, the PRHC is a Joint Commission accredited chronic care pediatric public health hospital serving the more complex medical, rehabilitative, educational, and recreational needs of children and young adults with Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy and other Neuromuscular Disorders, Myelodysplasia, trauma based disability including brain injury, and other congenital or acquired physically debilitating disorders. The PRHC has a current inpatient capacity of 93 and provides day services during its summer program for 145 children from across the Commonwealth.

Provides primary nursing care to patients by administering medications, injections and treatments by charting vital signs; and by evaluating patients’ conditions and notifying physicians of specific abnormalities. Functions as charge nurse on assigned unit, direct nursing care of patients on assigned unit by developing an individual care plan for each patient, making nursing assignments, and holding conferences with staff regarding patients’ needs to insure continuity of care and compliance with facility standards and regulations, provides nursing assessments for Evaluation Team Meetings. Responds to emergency situations and initiates emergency medical procedures.
Information/work (patient, care provided, results of care, organizational performance) is coordinated and integrated through daily paperwork, shift report and documentation.
Exchange of appropriate patient care and clinical information when patients are admitted, referred, transferred or discharged through Interdisciplinary Team and Discharge Process. Provides on-going supervision to subordinates regarding performance and need for training. Provides a safe and supportive environment for patients, family, visitors, and staff by knowledge of safety protocols, disaster drill, fire procedure. Acts as a preceptor for new employees; instructs personnel in nursing techniques, policies and procedures and equipment. Ability to lift and carry heavy objects or persons with or without accommodation.
Full-time positions, shift and days off to be determined.
Shifts:
Day: 7:00am - 3:30pm
Evening: 3:00pm - 11:30pm
Night: 11:15pm - 7:15am
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of nursing practices and procedures relative to pediatrics
Knowledge of human anatomy
Knowledge of age specific physiological, psychological and psychosocial changes, developmental needs, equipment needs and appropriate therapeutic intervention for the school-aged child, adolescent, young adult population

Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. A Graduate degree with a major in Nursing may be substituted for the required experience .*

  • Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES: Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.

  • Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.
Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.
