TITLE: SCHOOL NURSEQUALIFICATIONS: 1.A Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university.2.Licensure as a! registered nurse (RN).3.Maintains a valid Massachusetts certification as a school nurse per regulations of the Massachusetts Department of Education.4.Previous successful experience in school nursing, public health, or pediatrics preferred.5.A proven ability to relate to a variety of constituencies including, but not limited to, administrators, teachers, parents, students, physicians, and human service agencies.6.Must possess a sense of humor.7.Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Department may find appropriate and acceptable.REPORTS TO: Building Principal and/or Director of Pupil Personnel Services SUPERVISES: Students in health services and school health aide as assigned.JOB GOALS: 1.To coordinate the smooth and efficient operation of the school health services in order to realize that service's maximum positive impact on the education environment.2.The professional school nurse is an essential member of the educational team responsible for protec! ting, promoting, and improving the health status of all studen! ts and staff. The unique contribution of the nurse lies in the ability to provide professional health care and to coordinate the resources of the school, home, and community as they pertain to the total health of the students and the staff as appropriate. The school nurse is strategically located to maximize each child's potential to learn and grow by providing the best possible health care. Health care in the school, as provided by school nurses, includes identification of health problems, preventive health measures, health maintenance care and necessary therapeutic intervention.PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES (include but are not limited to): 1.Functions as a contributing member of the school in all aspects of the school program.

2.The school nurse consults with the school physician, school administrators and others to recommend the establishment, review, and revision of policies, procedures, and specific programs for assessing, improving, and maintaining student he! alth. 3.Assesses/evaluates the total health and developmental status of each student through nursing assessment reviews and the use of evaluation techniques. 4.Assures the school attendance for children who must use medication in the treatment of disabilities or illnesses. 5.Assists students, parents, and teachers to obtain wellness by stimulating behavior change through individual and group health counseling.

6.Maintains comprehensive school health records. 7.Assists in the appropriate placement of students with special needs as mandated under Public Law 94-142 and Massachusetts Chapter 766. 8.Assists students, parents, and teachers to adapt to a student's chronic health problems. 9.Protects the well-being of students both in and out of school including the state legal mandates relative to child neglect and abuse.10.Works collaboratively with health educators, teachers, and other staff in promoting healthful behaviors.11.Makes provision for being available to stud! ents and parents for education-related purposes outside the instruction! al day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.12.Helps arrange and supervise school based, student health exams.13.Assures that the health needs of the school population are considered in the community's overall health planning.14.Protects the students and staff by promoting a safe physical environment including the inventory and maintenance of required health office supplies.15.Provides student physical assessments and performs such other related duties as directed by supervisors for appropriate forums and purposes.16.Contributes to the improvement of the profession and strives to maintain and improve personal and professional competence.17.Performs such other related tasks and assumes such other related responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by the Principal and/or Director of Pupil Personnel Services as appropriate.The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by employees assigned to! this classification.
