A certified laboratory assistant serves as the liaison between the laboratory and the patient by accurately obtaining blood (an! d other body fluids) and by performing EKG’s, placing Holter monitors and performing therapeutic phlebotomy on patients of all ages using methods appropriate to the age and condition of the patient and ensuring maximum safety, expertise and comfort to the patient. Obtains and processes the information necessary to register patients for laboratory services.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

Specimen Handling

1. Collects and processes specimens in accordance with laboratory procedures by:

a. collecting specimens and processing correctly;
b. labeling specimens for identification purposes and entering specimen data into LIS;
c. determining acceptability of specimens submitted to the lab;
d. notifying Laboratory Manager or Technologist of unacceptable specimens and documenting the incident; and
e. preparing and processing samples for shipment to reference laboratories.

2. Judges appropriateness of test reques! ts by checking questionable orders with Laboratory Manager or ! Technologist.

3. Handles and disposes of laboratory specimens in accordance with laboratory safety procedure by:

a. wearing personal protective equipment as required;
b. disposing of bio-hazardous waste and sharps correctly;
c. maintaining a clean work area and disinfecting as specified; and
d. consulting with Laboratory Manager or Technologist when cleaning a spill or disposing of chemical waste.

4. Must be familiar with LIS (Laboratory Information System) for registration, medical necessity determination, order entry, result entry (when applicable), and obtaining and distributing patient results.
5. Ability to perform CLIA waived functions (as trained).

Clerical

6. Responsible for the point of service registration of outpatients and non-patients, and medical necessity determination, as applicable.

7. Answers the telephone courteously and quic! kly, taking messages, providing routine information, and/or referring call to appropriate member of the laboratory staff.

8. Files laboratory reports as required, e.g., distributes reference lab reports to clinicians.

9. Distributes incoming and outgoing mail.

10. Types miscellaneous correspondence, committee reports, procedures, etc., as required by Laboratory Manager.

11. Photocopies materials as required.

12. Assists in tabulating the monthly statistical reports.

13. Keeps work area clean and orderly, inventories and stocks work area as needed.

14. Relays patient results either by phone, fax, or hand delivery as needed.

15. Cooperates with business office to assure proper patient billing.

16. Clearly and accurately completes patient information on laboratory requisition slips.

17. Receives and checks supplies as they arrive contacting the Laboratory Manager when errors are observed.!

18. Receives and processes written requests for laboratory st! udies from physicians and nursing staff.

Communication

19. Uses appropriate oral and written communication skills to present relevant ideas or information by:

a. reporting to Laboratory Manager any problems or suggestions;
b. exchanging job related information with co-workers;
c. maintaining awareness of lab changes by attending by attending lab meetings;
d. communicating with physicians, clients, and co-workers in a courteous manner;
e. providing support in implementation of new procedures and routines;
f. contributing to an harmonious and effective working environment within the department;
g. seeking out opportunities to enhance personal professional development;
h. instructing patients in proper collection of laboratory specimens; and
i. reading the communication log daily.

Other Department Responsibilities

21. Reviews clerical p! rocedures as required and recommends appropriate changes.

22. Assists in the training of new employees.

23. Attends continuing education programs, when available, and reads laboratory journals to keep current on new techniques and procedures.

24. Identifies alarm values and brings them to the attention of a Technologist.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required for the Position

Knowledge of:
§ Medical Terminology (required)
§ CLIA waived testing (preferred)
§ Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

Skills:
The Certified Lab Assistant must be capable of problem solving related to appropriate specimen collection, handling and order entry in the LIS.

Abilities:
§ Ability to tactfully communicate with both internal and external customers.
§ Ability to handle stress and work in emergency situations. Ability to use of fingers and hands to operate! all laboratory-related equipment as described on the Laboratory Depart! ment checklist. Additionally, must use beeper, telephone, calculator, fax, and other related office equipment.
§ Ability to stand and walk constantly.
§ Ability to lift up to forty (40) pounds unassisted.
§ Ability to bend, twist, crouch, squat, pull, push, reach, and remain stationary for short period of times and perform repetitive motions.
§ Frequent bending, twisting, crouching, squatting, pulling, pushing, and reaching required, as well as the ability to remain stationary for short periods and perform repetitive motions
§ Ability to use hands, fingers, arms and wrists, hearing, smell, and verbal skills are required in order to perform job duties.

Credentials and Experience Required
§ High School Degree or GED required.
§ Minimum of 2years prior experience as a laboratory assistant (required).
§ Certification as Phlebotomist or Medical Laboratory Assistant from an accredited program (required).
§ Current BLS (preferr! ed).
Special Requirements
§ Although the position generally works the day shift, occasional evening shift assignments, as well as weekend assignments, are a possibility.
§ Must be available to work overtime as needed to complete all job duties.
§ Must be available to work in the case of a hospital declared emergency.
