The Institute for Patient Care (IPC) at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) is seeking a Director! of Research and Innovation to serve as an integral member of the nursing leadership team. The Director of Research and Innovation is a seasoned researcher and dedicated scholar to the advancement of nursing knowledge and the improvement of patient care through research and innovation. The Director facilitates the success of two centers within the Institute for Patient Careâ€"The Yvonne L. Munn Center for Nursing Research and The Center for Innovations in Care Deliveryâ€"by developing and disseminating interdisciplinary initiatives that support research and innovation activities through internal and external funding sources.

Job Description

The Director has an established, nationally funded program of research, in addition to experience as a leader in organizations, as well as academic and clinical practice settings. The Director has earned recognition through presentation and dissemination of scholarship in a variety of forums including publications in pe! er -reviewed journals.
Reporting to the Executive Director! of the Institute for Patient Care, the Director of Research and Innovation seeks newopportunities to promote nursing research, and the translation of research to improve clinical practice. Through active participation in new and sustaining initiatives, the Director uses personal knowledge and research expertise to engage in multiple forums that promote the development and advancement of a research agenda within Patient Care Services (PCS) and beyond.
In conjunction with Senior Leadership, the Director establishes the Center’s strategic direction, overseeing daily operations, developing and evaluating the infrastructure of the Centers, and establishing linkages with members of the MGH community. Meanwhile s/he develops, supports, and evaluates the infrastructure within the Munn Center for Nursing Research and The Center for Innovation in Care Delivery, while managing all research and innovation activities from inception to implementation.

Organizational Leade! rship
Develops, implements and continually evaluates the infrastructure that facilitates growth and expansion of a program of research and innovation across the nursing and patient care services;
Implements and evaluates programs that foster research, grant development and research mentorship for all staff;
Develops and oversees innovation projects to foster a culture of innovation and to advance the delivery of care;
Builds and engenders a climate of entrepreneurship and innovation;
Creates opportunities for internal and external funding and provides needed support to facilitate grant submissions;
Works with the MGH community to advance nursing research through nursing and interdisciplinary forums that optimizes patient care;
Fosters relationships and linkages with interprofessional research and innovation groups across Patient Care Services and the MGH system;
Promotes the utilization of nursing evidence and translation of nursing research ! into clinical practice;
Actively participates in grant review proce! sses within the Center, the Harvard Catalyst, Clinical Innovations Awards projects, etc.;
Participates in the development, evaluation and advancement of nurse researchers and nurse scientists within the center and across PCS;
Participates in the development, evaluation and advancement of Innovation Fellows within the center and across PCS;
Acts as a thought leader, provides strategic insights and recommendations to senior leaders regarding research and innovation;
Scans the environment both internally and externally for emerging trends in clinical practice;
Facilitates the growth and development of research, evaluation and innovation across the Institute for Patient Care, Patient Care Services and MGH;
Sets strategic vision and direction and creates new opportunities for the organization.
Personnel Management
Interviews, hires, and evaluates all staff members on a timely basis and assures continuance of necessary skills and knowledge so as to! advance the strategic initiatives of the department;
Establishes a work climate that fosters high morale, high productivity, and opportunity for professional growth in accordance with all MGH policies and procedures;
Provide effective leadership to all staff members ensuring high morale and productivity through the application of various performance management techniques;
Promotes the building of effective teams through various team-building methods and practices;
Facilitates the continuing education of staff through the development of programs that address research and inquiry (e.g. grant writing, concept development, statistics and measurement, instrument development and qualitative inquiry.
Operations Management
Maintains fiscal responsibility for the Center’s budget by developing the budget and monitoring expenses;
Establishes efficient systems and processes and continues to seek ways to improve organizational performance;
Assures all ! activities are in compliance with hospital and regulatory standards. Creates opportunities for internal and external funding and develops the infrastructure to support to facilitate grant submissions;
Participates in the development of support services, databases and other resources needed to increase the visibility of nursing research and innovation at the MGH;
Develops systems to facilitate grant management and assures compliance with all funded grants;
Manages own research grant budget, as appropriate.
Professional Development
Disseminates research findings at national and international meetings;
Actively publishes research alone and in collaboration with others;
Shares research results with nursing, other professional and the lay community;
Provides research consultation/collaboration with nurses and other professional colleagues from within, Patient Care Services, MGH and globally;
Engages in self-performance appraisal on a regular basis, identifying areas of strength and areas for professional deve! lopment.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and professional experience:
Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with a Master’s in nursing and a PhD / Doctorate in Nursing (research intensive) or related field required;
Licensed in Massachusetts as a registered nurse;
A well-developed program of research, established research tract record with external funding, and scholarship;
An identified Principle Investigator of a nationally funded study.

Well-qualified candidates will possess:
Demonstrated strong leadership qualities and skills to direct the vision of a team and provide direction;
Excellent quantitative analytical skills and knowledge of budgeting and business analysis;
Demonstrated superior skills in communication, collaboration, organization, financial and personnel management, and project management;
Proven ability to understand innovation as a busines! s competency and discipline;
Excellent professional demeanor with p! roven ability to build and manage relationships;
Requires good understanding of organizational behavior, adult learning theories, and program evaluation;
Demonstrates competence as a skilled researcher, has an established history of mentoring others to advance their own research, and provides evidence of collaboration in scholarly works and presentations;
Provides an understanding of academic medical centers and is skillful in developing effective relationships and alliances.
