This announcement will be used to create an eligibility list to backfill future vacancies that may occur within the next twelve (12) months.
The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) is recruiting qualified individuals for the establishment of an eligibility pool to fill Part-Time Train Operator vacancies that may occur in the Transportation Department. Under the general supervision of Supervisors and Foreworkers, Train Operators operate an automated passenger train according to established safety and operating rules and procedures. Train Operators are responsible for passenger safety, communicating with passengers and co-workers via public address systems and radios; monitoring and troubleshooting electrical/mechanical train equipment, completing standard written reports, and performing other related duties as necessary. In addition, Train Operators must maintain and upgrade knowledge and skills related to train operation procedures.

Essential Job Functions
- Monitors console and radio communications to ensure that vehicles are operating within established guidelines.
- Observes and detects problems with passengers entering and exiting train doors and take corrective action; observes and detects hazards on the track, in the station or platforms, or on the train itself, reports them to Operations Control Center personnel via radio, and takes necessary corrective action.
- Makes announcements to passengers regarding station arrivals, transfer points, delays and emergencies and answers passenger questions.
- In yards, on test tracks, turntables and wash facilities, follows directions from Tower personnel and operates console to move trains as directed.
- Takes prescribed action such as evacuating passengers, administering first aid, and using a fire extinguisher during emergencies.
- Reports basic equipment malfunctions of a mechanical or electrical nature to Operations Control Center; works with Foreworkers and technicians to isolate reported problems.
- Maintains logs of work activities; completes forms to report unusual circumstances and action taken.
- Uses a variety of communication equipment, including a public address system, two-way radios and emergency telephones.
- Monitors and learns to apply changes in operating and emergency procedures.
- Maintains and upgrades knowledge of policies and procedures as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Possession of a high school diploma, GED or recognized equivalent.
Experience:
Three (3) years of full-time equivalent verifiable experience interacting with the general public in a variety of situations.
Other Requirements:
- Must possess and maintain a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain District certification as a Train Operator.
- Must be physically able to step over high voltage third rail, walk to trains along tracks, and climb into train cab.
- Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment medical exam that uses the standards of the California Commercial driver’s license and maintain a valid California driver’s license.
- Must be willing to work off-hours shifts, holidays and weekends.
- Must be able to understand, read and communicate (both orally and in writing) in English.
- Selected applicants must successfully complete the Train Operator Training Program, the Joint Management-Union Certification Committee, and a 90-day probationary period. The position also requires periodic recertification per PUC regulations. This is a safety- sensitive position and is subject to an extensive pre-employment medical examination which includes a drug and alcohol screening. Selected applicants must also be fingerprinted by the BART Police Department and pass a functional capacity test.

Selection Process
This position is represented by Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU). Applications will be screened to assure that minimum qualifications are met. Those applicants who meet minimum qualifications will then be referred to the hiring department for the completion of further selection processes.
The selection process for this position may include a skills/performance demonstration, a written examination, and/or an individual or panel interview.

S.; pass a pre-employment medical examination which includes a drug and alcohol screen, and which is specific to the essential job functions and requirements.
