The laboratory supervisors’ primary responsibilities are to provide technical oversight to the laboratory, ensuring accurate and timely delivery of laboratory results. Through training and supervision, the laboratory supervisor ensures that laboratory personnel adhere to best documented practices, including quality, safety and environmental procedures. He or she maintains, audits, and monitors all required systems, processes, methods and equipment. The incumbent collects specimens, performs quality control and analytical testing, and evaluates and reports results following theories and principles of prescribed strategies. He or she uses independent judgment in problem solving and the evaluation of abnormal results, and is available as a resource for MTs, MLTs and phlebotomists.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

Technical Responsibilities

1. Calibrates all analyzers regularly, and reviews results with laboratory manager.

2. Performs routine maintenance on all analyzers (daily, weekly, monthly, annually).

3. Develops and regularly reviews QC and QA activities.

4. Troubleshoots analyzers, resolving technical problems and ensuring that remedial actions are taken as needed.

5. Evaluates and ensures competency, training, and performance of laboratory personnel. Identifies training needs and ensures that each individual performing tests receives the appropriate education.

6. Routinely monitors the resulting / recording of test results. 7. Takes responsibility for elements of LIS programming and troubleshooting, as directed by the laboratory manager.

8. Assists in developing, reviewing and maintaining technical manuals.

9. Performs technical evaluations of potential new tests. Works closely with laboratory manager and director to select appropriate test methodology.

10. Provides support for Joint Commission and CAP regulatory compliance. Participates in CAP proficiency testing program.

11. Manages ad hoc projects as assigned by the laboratory manager.

12. Represents department on committees assigned by laboratory manager. Prepares and presents technical reports on laboratory activity and effectiveness.

13. Covers duties of the laboratory manager during absences.

14. Oversees and is capable of performing all tasks associated with specimen handling.

15. Oversees and is capable of performing all tasks related to Quality Control.

16. Demonstrates knowledge of testing principles, limitations of procedures, and instrument operation. Accepts assignment by laboratory manager to serve as primary operator of a laboratory instrument, developing in-depth knowledge about the analyzer’s operation and maintenance.

17. Ensures testing is completed within designated turn-around time and staff time is organized effectively.

18. Records and reports test results in accordance with laboratory procedures, including:

a. Conveys all panic values to the laboratory manager and ordering physician immediately upon verification of results, and documents time and date of call; b. Phones other results to the appropriate physician or nurse when requested to do so; c. Writes reports legibly.

19. Ensures production of accurate results by:
a. Documenting review of test results produced by other laboratory personnel, and correcting problems identified; b. Ensuring that corrected reports are sent as soon as possible in LIS, with a phone report also made to the ordering physician; c. Checking communication log daily for errors.

20. Performs troubleshooting when results are unexpected:
a. Recognizes unexpected results and correlates results with the patient’s previous lab work, diagnosis and specimen quality; b. Maintains familiarity with test method interferences that can lead to erroneous results; c. Confirms unexpected results before reporting, consulting with laboratory manager when appropriate; d. Serves as a resource person for MLT’s and phlebotomists in technical problem solving.

21. Oversees inventory of supplies and assists staff, where needed.

22. Answers the telephone as courteously and quickly as possible, taking messages, providing routine information, and/or referring calls to the appropriate party.

23. Files/archives laboratory reports as required.

24. Uses appropriate oral and written communication skills to clearly and effectively present relevant ideas or information:

a. Reporting any problems or suggestions to laboratory manager; b. Exchanging job related information with co-workers; c. Maintaining awareness of changes within the laboratory by attending lab meetings; d. Communicating with physicians, clients, and co-workers in a courteous manner; e. Providing support in implementation of new procedures and routines; f. Contributing to harmonious and effective working environment within the department.

25. Attends Continuing Education programs, when available, and reads appropriate journals to keep current on new advances in instrumentation, techniques and procedures.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required for the Position

Skills: Adequate technical knowledge, skill and judgment to function unsupervised during on-call, second shift, and weekend hours. Experience training other employees on new laboratory procedures Tactful communication Familiar with Microsoft Office, including email, Excel, and Word

Abilities:
§ Ability to work independently and cooperatively with managers, employees, vendors, contractors, and other agencies § Ability to handle stress and work in emergency situations; § Ability to use of fingers and hands to operate all laboratory-related equipment as described on the laboratory department checklist. Additionally, must use beeper, telephone, calculator, fax, and other related office equipment; § Ability to stand and walk constantly throughout the work day; § Ability to lift up to forty (40) pounds unassisted § Ability to bend, twist, crouch, squat, pull, push, reach, and remain stationary for short period of times and perform repetitive motions; § Ability to use hands, fingers, arms and wrists, hearing, smell, and verbal skills are required in order to perform job duties. § Ability to operate and program the LIS, after appropriate training.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of Laboratory Information System maintenance preferred
  • Knowledge of CAP/Joint Commission certification requirements and process
Credentials and Experience Required § Medical Technologist certification from ASCP, AMT and/or NCA required. § At least 2 years supervisory experience in a clinical laboratory is preferred. § LIS experience preferred. § NIMS training for ICS 100, 200, and 700 must be completed within 30 days of hire Special Requirements § Although the laboratory supervisor generally works the day shift, evening shift assignments, as well as the need to be on-call on a rotating basis for evening/nights, weekends, and holidays are required. § Must be available to work overtime as needed to complete all job duties. § Must be available to work in the case of a hospital declared emergency.
