The Lactation Educator provides breastfeeding support and anticipatory guidance through private individual consultations, drop in groups and warm line calls. Private consultations take place in an office! in our centers, and are scheduled in advance. Prenatal visits, initial consultations, and follow up visits are available.
Lactation Educators also instruct our “Breastfeeding Basics†course, a three-hour interactive prenatal class. Using established curriculum provided by Isis, instructors keep learners engaged using interactive lecture and discussion, demonstration, power point and video. Topics include physiology of lactation, latch and positioning, establishing milk supply, signs of success, common concerns and problem-solving, the partner or support person’s role, and guidance on the selection of nursing bras, pillows and other nursing items. Courses are offered in a large group setting at our Isis Center locations. Opportunities may exist for teaching Isis classes at area hospitals and community health centers.
Responsibilities:
Create a comfortable, safe and inclusive environment allowing expectant and parents the opportunity to ask! questions feel more confident and supported both before and d! uring their breastfeeding experience.
Assess feeding concerns, create a feeding plan, assist with implementation of plan and provide follow up.
Teach clients appropriate use of assistive materials including breastpumps, shields, breast care products.
Maintain visit records of consultation including communication to health care providers as needed.
Set-up and break-down of classroom including chairs and teaching materials.
Follow the curriculum provided; enhance topics with professional and personal experiences.
Remain current in related topic areas through readings, workshops, professional affiliations and Isis communications.
Maintain familiarity with Isis Parenting products and services and guide clients to find the appropriate products, classes and services for their needs.
Attend periodic training sessions, class observations and team meetings.
Key Requirements:
IBCLC certificati! on and three or more years of hands-on breastfeeding consultation experience.
Current professional experience with early pediatric (birth to1 year) and/or Maternal Child Health expertise.
Excellent verbal communication skills, comfort with basic technology including email, Power Point, DVDs.
Two or more years of Parent Education with large group classroom teaching experience preferred.
The physical ability to lift bins of class materials, stack and un-stack chairs and stand for extended periods of time.
