The UC Santa Barbara Office of Development blends the strengths of both a centralized and a decentralized operation. Although all development officers report to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Development or his/her designee, some are dedicated to specific schools and units, working hand-in-hand with Deans, Directors and faculty to secure private support. Additional development officers focus on specific regions of the country and/or are dedicated to increasing involvement by alumni, parents and friends. A strong central core initiates programs, or provides guidance and expertise, in foundation relations, planned giving, capital projects, donor stewardship, The UCSB Foundation and other areas of specialization. An integrated tracking and coordination system ensures a collaborative and smooth working environment, all aimed at enhancing UC Santa Barbara's attractiveness to, and involvement with, the private sector.

Brief Summary of Job Duties

Under general supervision, serves as the analyst for the Regional Development and Student Academic Success Initiatives Team ("Team") in the Office of Development, supporting a complex and multifaceted program in coordination with Central Development's Prospect Management, Development Research and Donor Relations units. Provides leadership for all analytical functions that support the strategic goals, initiatives and projects leading toward the philanthropic support from individuals, foundations and organizations. Under the general supervision of the Director of Development Services, Regional and Constituent Giving and/or his/her designee, establishes, develops and maintains comprehensive systems within the unit in coordination with central Development Office; supports the Team in short- and long-term strategic planning and project management for program development and implementation which is focused on achieving operational and fundraising goals. Proactively organizes, and attends strategy moves management meetings and coordinates follow up for discussed prospects; prepares materials and reports that analyze the activities, progress, and goals of the Team; ensures the consistency, timeliness and accuracy of information disseminated to donors, prospects, and internal constituents. Reviews and analyzes data as it relates to fundraising strategies and prospect identification and management and associated trends. Coordinates communication and works closely with the Development Research and Donor Relations & Stewardship units on collaborative projects and related prospect issues and opportunities. Identifies, manages and completes special projects for other research, fundraising, and stewardship goals as needed. Responsible for a high level of prospect and gift analysis and research, providing analytical reporting to the Directors of Development, Regional Giving and Student Academic Success Initiatives as appropriate. Proactively identifies issues and solutions, and makes recommendations to the Team. Supports the Senior Director and Senior Directors of Development with events and other activities for fundraising and stewardship purposes. Must be able to work under pressure of frequently shifting priorities and deadlines. This role contributes to the overall goals and success of the unit. Knowledge and understanding of a complex fundraising program is helpful to providing effective leadership. The Analyst will be privy to sensitive materials, information and planning, therefore, the position requires the utmost degree of confidentiality. Maintains in depth knowledge of University policies and procedures and state and federal regulations related to fund raising and accepted business practices; uses exceptional analytical skills, excellent composition, grammar and editing skills, and various database and software tools necessary to accomplish assigned tasks.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated experience in strong organizational skills and unfailing attention to detail and accuracy.
  • 1-3 years Exceptional verbal and interpersonal skills that foster positive relationships with diverse populations.
  • 1-3 years Experience and solid computer skills including proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet, e-mail, social media platforms, and demonstrated ability to quickly learn various software programs.
  • 1-3 years Exceptional analytical skills on topics diverse in scope,

Preferred Experience

  • 1-3 years Experience with donor database or CRM software (e.g. Advance, Raiser's Edge, Blackbaud, etc.)

Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties

  • 40% Project Management & Strategic Development - Plans, organizes, attends, tracks and coordinates follow up for strategy moves management meetings for prospects in the Regional and Constituent Giving portfolios, and creates action plans to manage next steps. Coordinates with central prospect management to track strategy meeting outcomes and next steps. - Conducts research directly, as well as in coordination with central development research, on gift prospects and suspects; supports research on key divisional initiatives and makes recommendations. - Develops planning tools, reports, presentations, and trainings to enhance team building and address the business needs of the overall fundraising operation. - Works collaboratively with Advancement Services to ensure the data integrity of prospect information, suggest enhancements, and develop new reporting. - Synthesizes material from multiple sources, compiles and edits into coherent, accurate and concise profiles and summaries, using established standards of style, grammar and content. - Reviews and edits gift proposals, gift letters and other gift documents. - Helps coordinate and prepare Development Officers for donor visits, solicitations, and high level events. - Under general direction of supervisor, assists with any special projects on behalf of the Regional and Constituent Giving Development Team. Maintains a close and effective working relationship with other development units, facilitating collaborative efforts between members and teams.
  • 40% Complex Analysis & Reporting

COMPLEX ANALYSIS: - Maintains an active awareness of goals, objectives, and directions of the development program as a whole. - In conjunction with DOs, develops a comprehensive plan that addresses the goals, objectives and needs set by the Regional Development Team. - Provides analytical support to the Team utilizing a solid understanding of UCSB Foundation financial reports, Advance database, AWA reports, and UC policies and practices. - Interprets prospect and donor information, and facilitates communication regarding prospects to staff of all levels and technical abilities. Requires excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. - Troubleshoots/problem solves regularly to obtain required information that will coordinate and track fundraising activity. - Performs analyses to assess the effectiveness of overall strategies.

REPORTING AND DATA ANALYTICS: - Uses Advance to develop ad-hoc database queries to identify and segment target populations, analyze prospect and donor constituencies, and support a range of business decisions. - Creates reports for the Team, reviews current and past reports and makes recommendations for follow up with donors. - Produces tailored gift reports and background data from the Advance database for use in meetings with senior administrators, faculty, Trustees, and volunteers. - Develops new analytical reports that provide accurate projections of gifts in the pipeline and demographic snapshots of prospect pool. Prepares and distributes prospect management reports. - Provides ongoing analyses of the data in these reports to identify relevant trends; interprets content of narrative reports and other submitted information to pull out key information and communicates that information to senior staff.

  • 20% Strategic Stewardship & Planning - - Develops stewardship strategies for key donors and gifts to the University, working collaboratively with Regional & Constituent Team development officers on their respective area program plans. - Partners closely with the Senior Director and Senior Directors of Development on impact reporting, stewardship events, and other stewardship projects. - Develops a comprehensive stewardship plan for key donors for regional, graduate division, and undergraduate academic success initiatives. - Performs regular analyses to assess the effectiveness of overall strategies. - Develops innovative, unique and personalized donor relations/stewardship communications and engagement experiences for major donors as directed by the Senior Director and Senior Directors of Development. - Stays abreast of current and emerging trends in donor stewardship, philanthropy, fundraising, and higher education in order to make recommendations.
