Neonatal Intensive Care Nurses care for premature and critically ill newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of a hospital. Babies in the NICU are born needing immediate medical attention that can include connecting them to a breathing machine or tubes that allow them to be fed intravenously so they can gain weight. Neonatal Nurses monitor newborns’ condition, administer necessary medication, rec! ord progress and recovery, and provide comfort to babies in di! stress.
Neonatal nurses typically work under the direction of a physician caring for the newborn, helping to educate new mothers about their baby’s conditions, breastfeeding, and answering their questions.
